“This wood…is it yours, princess? I fear that I'm lost.”
Isabella spun about, startled and confused. She had heard no one approach, but there stood a young man in jeweled doublet and fur-trimmed cloak. Bearing a royal sword. And undoubtedly human.
In turn, the prince stared at her. Even among the thick trees all about them, her lavender chiffon gown glistened like gossamer. A shimmering belt, like a shaft of spring water, cascaded from her waist. On her feet shone sandals adorned with delicate gems.
Then the prince's eyes widened in alarm as he caught sight of the flower in Isabelle's hair. Colors flushed and ebbed from the petals in a glorious kaleidoscope of colors.
“Blessed be,” he whispered. “You're a…” He stumbled back from her, nearly tripping over a root.
Isabella put out a hand to steady him. Quietly she said, “I am not a princess. Nor are these my woods. But I do know the way back to your road. If you would trust me to show you the way…”
The prince's gaze shifted to her eyes-a beautiful, calm steady blue. There he found the assurance he was seeking.
…At the edge of the road, Isabella left the prince with a soft good-bye. Yet still he lingered, staring after Isabelle and gently holding the flower from her hair.
